ABOUT US:
Hearthside Crafts Ltd. started in Edmonton, Alberta Canada
Kathy discovered Pat at an antique show, where she was hand quilting a quilt, with a handmade frame made by her husband, Steve.
Later, she teamed up with Pat and Clara to make Patchwork and Quilted products for sale at the Edmonton Art Gallery, and other shops including The Four Corners in Ottawa, Ontario on Sparks St.
Soon, the first Printed Plastic Patchwork Templates© which could be cut out, drilled, and written on for size and other information were created. These were sold through the large chain stores and emerging quilt shops in Canada, the USA, France, and other countries.
With Laurie Sobie, Kathy wrote, and Laurie illustrated the book Patchwork & Quiltmaking for Beginners© as part of a kit for Sears' Canada Catalog. This came with the J Series set of Printed Patchwork Templates©, and a wood, expandable "Quilt-As-You-Go" Frame.
Illustrations for the template sets instructions were created by Karen Cantine by hand, without benefit of computer software. An accomplished goldsmith and designer, Karen's creative input was instrumental in creating a quality product. When the opportunity came to provide a column for the Edmonton Journal newspaper, she provided the accompanying illustrations for the copy Kathy wrote. These same drawings were included in the new paper patterns, and the many promotional items for the shop.
Pat made dozens of samples for the shop, and pattern cover photos. She and Clara taught classes for hundreds of beginner quilters.
People came to volunteer, and to be part of the shop staff in all capacities from accounting to sales, to producing patterns and templates, packaging, shipping, designing, teaching, writing, copying, coordinating with The Rehab who helped with packaging, to the children who filled in whenever they could. We all learned and grew, and felt we had helped create a penomenon that soon became North America wide, and indeed global.
Hundreds of quilt shops were opening, and the company expanded to open the first quilt shop in Edmonton. Calico Country Store© on 124th St. carried the pattern & templates line, calico & other fabrics, notions, books and magazines, taught classes, showed slides of shows, travelled and consulted with others to bring quilting shops into design centers and creative hives of activity for all ages.
